4. Principal’s Welcome
Hello, Greetings from Coláiste Éamann Rís, Majella Gleeson is my name and as new principal of Coláiste Éamann Rís, I would like to welcome you all to our virtual open day. We would much prefer if parents could be present with us at our annual open night but this is not possible with Covid 19. I hope you enjoy this virtual tour, which is intended to help parents and students learn more about our school- its ethos, facilities, programmes, extra-curricular and academic performance.
Starting secondary school is a major milestone for your son but we know he is ready for it. We as school leaders and staff will do everything possible here in Coláiste Éamann Rís to make the transition as easy as possible for your son. From my experience, the vast majority of children are ready for the move and settle in very quickly. Here in Coláiste Éamann Rís we have put in place a very successful First Year Mentoring programme to guide and help your son get to know the place and resolve any problems which may arise. We also have a well-established Forbairt programme where each First year student is linked with a teacher. Because our class sizes are relatively small, there is a very good and positive rapport between staff and students.
We, look forward to welcoming your son to an Edmund Rice School, which is grounded in the Edmund Rice Tradition. Here at Coláiste Éamann Rís we strive to provide opportunities for your son to excel in all aspects of his development. We have a long proud history of educating students from the catchment area of Callan. Front and central to all we do here in Coláiste Éamann Rís is excelling in teaching and learning, in allowing your son achieve his full potential in a well-rounded holistic manner. We seek to provide a Christian environment where our students can develop sound moral values, personal and social skills and the highest standard of excellence they can achieve. We have a wide array of extra-curricular activities, hurling,
soccer, mini company and community involvement, just to name a few. Our teachers are extremely generous with their time and demonstrate confidence, commitment and professionalism in their approach to their teaching and learning.
We have made a major investment in Information Technology to enhance teaching and learning in the school and this investment will facilitate and enhance remote learning should the need arise. We cater for students of all abilities in offering a broad curriculum for Junior and Senior Cycle and Transition Year, offering an array of subjects to students at both higher and ordinary level.
We share our campus with St. Brigid’s College allowing us to offer an expanding array of subjects. As you are aware, we are amalgamating as one school on the site of St. Brigid’s College in our new school Coláiste Abhainn Rí, where the plans are well in progress to be realised in September 2022. This will bring a new exciting chapter in Education in Callan.
Above all else, what is fundamental to us is the safety, welfare and contentment of your son who will join us here in Coláiste Éamann Rís in September 2021. We see it as a privilege to welcome your son and to guide and nurture him on his journey over the coming years.
