U-14 Hurling vs Ballyhale 2/2/2016

The second round of the Juvenile League was hosted in the grounds of Callan Cbs where they welcomed near rivals Ballyhale. On a wet and cold day in near un-playable conditions both teams went at each other from the start and it was evident there was a great desire for victory from both sides. Ballyhale opted to play with a third man at times in the middle third in an attempt to work the ball closer to goal and they applied a lot of pressure onto the Callan backs early in the first half. Jason O’Brien however who was excellent throughout kept his backs on their toes from the goal line and they withstood the early pressure from Ballyhale. Such were the conditions the teams were even at halftime on a scoreline 0-1 to 0-1 proving just how difficult it was to hurl on the day. Callan started the second half at a blistering pace with Mikey Wallace scoring two goals in the space of a couple of minutes, this lead was always going to prove difficult for Ballyhale to close with the poor conditions. Mid-way through the second half however they did manage to work a penalty. An excellently struck penalty by Ballyhale’s centre forward was stopped by O’Brien in the goal and quickly cleared away much to the delight of the Callan backs who were roaring on each other during the treacherous weather. The game finished on a scoreline of Callan CBS 2-4 Ballyhale 0-2. Callan CBS now await to play Grennan College in the next round of the league.

Well done to all the player who showed great commitment and dedication in such tough conditions.

Callan CBS travelled to Ramsgrange, Co.Wexford to get their U-14 hurling campaign underway on the Thursday the 25th Feb. Up against a much more physical team in Ramsgrange, the Callan lads showed tremendous spirit and determination in what proved to be a very competitive match. Both teams exchanged points at the beginning of the first half before a Craig Lawlor goal put Callan in front, a lead they would not relinquish for the duration of the match. Further goals from Mikey Wallace and Craig Cahill after excellent individual efforts put Callan ahead at the interval on a scoreline of 3-7 to 0-9. The second half began with a fast start from Ramsgrange bringing the deficit back to 3 points before the Callan backs steadied the ship lead by full back and captain Sean Dunne. Darragh Bergin, Craig Cahill and Adrian McLawerence all hit the back of the net for Callan in the second half and killed off any chance of a comeback from Ramsgrange. The hard-working Liam Hennessy lead by example giving a fine display of hooking and blocking which spurred on his team mates. The game finished on a score line of  6-14 to 2-9. Well done to all the panel who represented the school in an exceptional manner.
