We have had a successful Transition Year in the school since 1996. This programme is designed to promote students maturity. Maturity in studies by making students more self-directed learners through the development of general, technical and academic skills.
Maturity in relation to work and careers by developing work-related skills
Personal maturity by providing opportunities to develop communication skills, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. Social maturity by developing greater ‘people’ skills and more awareness of the world outside school.
Our Transition Year coordinators over those 20 years have attained a very good level of balance between giving our students new experiences both within and outside the school while not neglecting the academic side of things. We currently have 18 different subjects on the TY curriculum.
This allows students to sample subjects they missed out on in Junior Cycle, strengthen subjects they may have been weak at and help them make informed subject choices for the other two years of the Leaving Cert cycle. An added advantage is that all students avail of two fortnight long periods of work experience during TY. Places on the TY course are currently limited to 24 students. In the current school year our students will have timetabled classes in the following subjects.
Gaeilge, Science , Art , English, Business, Engineering, Maths, Economics, Woodwork
Religion, Agricultural Science, Computers, History, SPHE, Careers, Geography, PE
